Spammers are now using more sophisticated techniques to bypass filters. Because these messages are now harder to filter, more is getting through to your mailbox. This has also been coupled with the fact that more spam is now being sent than ever before.

A lot of spam these days actually comes from what are known as botnets (short for "robot networks"). A botnet is a group of computers that have been compromised and are under somebody else's control without their owners realising it (also known as zombies). There are literally millions of zombies in thousands of botnets so it becomes very hard to filter Spam according to its place of origin.

The amount of spam being sent is increasing on a daily basis current statistics from a leading supplier of spam management software show that approximately 90% of all the E-mail messages sent on a daily basis are actually junk, so almost 9 out of every 10 messages are unwanted advertising propaganda.
